Slovakia is currently experiencing record-low unemployment, which stood at just 3.79% in February 2025. This trend is expected to continue in the near future. Several factors contribute to this situation – not only economic growth and new job creation, but also the emigration of skilled workers, the lower appeal of certain professions, an ageing population, and the retirement of the post-war baby boom generation.
As a result, many sectors are facing serious labour shortages and are actively looking for new employees.
In this article, we explore which professions are most in demand in Slovakia — and where you’re likely to find work most quickly.
There has been a critical shortage of workers in the healthcare sector for many years. The demand extends well beyond doctors, nurses, and paramedics — laboratory technicians, emergency responders, and other healthcare professionals are also in short supply across all regions.
This shortage is made worse by an ageing population and the increasing need for healthcare services.
The industrial sector is facing similar challenges. Many companies are struggling to find qualified technicians, machine operators, CNC operators, project and process engineers, and logistics specialists. Automotive manufacturers, which play a key role in Slovakia’s economy, currently have hundreds of vacancies across various roles.
Ongoing Challenges in the IT
The IT sector in Slovakia has been experiencing a long-term shortage of skilled professionals. As one of the fastest-growing industries, it offers above-average salaries and a wide range of opportunities for qualified candidates.
The transport sector is also under pressure. There is an increasing demand for lorry drivers and public transport operators, which is proving difficult to meet. It’s important to note that these roles can be physically and mentally demanding, but they remain essential to the smooth running of the economy and offer stable employment.
Construction work is physically demanding and continues to suffer from a shortage of labour. There is particularly high demand for construction managers, skilled tradespeople, and project managers.
The finance and economics sector also ranks among those in need of qualified professionals. Across Slovakia, companies are looking for accountants, financial analysts, and investment specialists. These roles typically require a strong command of English and experience with international IFRS standards or SAP accounting systems. However, the competitive salaries, especially in larger cities, make the sector an attractive career option.
Sales and marketing are also among the fastest-growing areas of employment. Employers often seek candidates with advanced digital skills, fluent English, and the ability to think analytically—qualities that are essential in today’s fast-paced market environment.
Services and Education
There is also growing demand for teachers, psychologists, and social workers, particularly in the fields of rehabilitation and elderly care services.
The service sector continues to face a shortage of workers. Catering, hospitality, support staff, and sales assistants are in high demand across Slovakia. While lower wages can be a drawback in this sector, the entry requirements for applicants tend to be less demanding, making these roles more accessible.
Unemployment in Slovakia is expected to remain low and may continue to decline in the coming months, partly due to the start of seasonal work in agriculture and construction.
The Slovak labour market is in need of workers across a wide range of sectors — from healthcare and technology to IT, services, and education. If you’re looking for stable employment with promising future prospects, it’s worth focusing on professions where demand remains consistently high. Many of these roles offer not only job security, but also opportunities for career development, retraining, and competitive financial rewards.
